Will windows 8 run proper programs or just apps

I use windows 7for both business and personal. As well as word processing, database and business administration software, I also do a lot of photo and video editing. Will windows 8 run proper grown up programs or just ipad/andriod style apps.

I just wanted to add information regarding Windows on Arm (WOA) so that it could be included with the information provided regarding 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 8 above.
WOA does not support running, emulating, or porting existing x86/64 desktop apps. Code that uses only system or OS services from WinRT can be used within an app and distributed through the Windows Store for both WOA and x86/64. Consumers obtain all software, including device drivers, through the Windows Store and Microsoft Update or Windows Update.
