I recently bought a HP laptop (64 bit) and I want to upgrade to windows 8.1 but I need to install 97 windows updates to get the new version of windows. How long will it take?

It might take 15 minutes or 2+ hours.... depends on System Speed, download speed (both your pipe and the update servers), and which ones are needed.
Start and go to bed. Or when you will not need the computer for a while.
Same for the 8.1 update which is very big so plan for it to take a while.
