Screen goes blank when connecting a pc to tv converter

I have a Toshiba laptop with windows 8. I am trying to connect a kworld pc to tv converter to it to split the screens to a tv. When I connect the converter to my laptop, my laptop screen goes blank and I can't see anything. I tried connecting my old Dell with windows 7 on it and that one works. Why is windows 8 not working with the converter?
